“The Mechanic” was a semester-long project I completed during my first year attending the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University (now the College of Art and Design at Lesley University).
I was exposed to a great cycling culture while living in Austin, Texas as a teenager, and wanted to photograph the behind-the-scenes aspect of that community. As a child, my father owned an auto-body repair shop. I spent a lot of time with him there, watching him delicately work in the paint booth, and fit body panels on the shop floor. When I decided to photograph bicycle mechanics, it amazed me just how similar the two professions are; the strict organization of tools, attention to detail, and the importance of craftsmanship.
